Abstract: The principal aim of this work is to design and test 36W and 80W Amorphous Metal (AMM) based magnetic lamp ballasts to demonstrate lower losses compared to the existing commercially available high efficiency magnetic ballasts. It is desired to achieve at least 10% loss reduction. The paper demonstrates the principles of the design and discusses possible future developments. Tests were performed on the AMM samples to confirm the magnetic properties of the material and also on the prototype ballasts in sample light assemblies to obtain input power and loss measurements
