Trained as a gardener in Germany, Richard Schomburgk survived explorations in British Guiana before emigrating to South Australia as the second director, 1865-1891, of the Adelaide Botanic Gardens. He was responsible for the iconic Moreton Bay Fig Walk, the first Victoria Lily House, the old Palm House and the Museum of Economic Botany, and the planting of Botanic Park
