Abstract: The parametric instability of rectangular stiffened plate due to periodic in-plane forces at boundaries is investigated using finite element method in this paper. The characteristic equations for the natural frequencies, buckling loads and their corresponding mode shapes are obtained from the equations of motion. Then, the method of Hill's infinite determinants is applied to analyze the dynamic instability regions. Numerical results are presented to demonstrate the effects of various parameters, such as aspect ratio, boundary conditions, and area ratio of the stiffeners and stiffening scheme, on the dynamic stability of stiffened plates subjected to in-plane uniform compression on all edges and in-plane uniform pure shear as shown in Figure 1. The results show that the location, size and number of stiffeners have a significant effect on the location of the boundaries of the principal instability regions.
