Black & white photograph. From left - Professor J. J. C. Smart, Harry Wesley-Smith, ?, K. J. Farrer. Mr. Wesley-Smith thinks that this would have been taken in one of the Academic vs Administrative staff cricket matches during the fifties. The matches were instituted by the Vice-Chancellor, A. P. Rowe, a keen cricketer. In those days no lectures were scheduled on Wednesday afternoons, and the time was reserved for sporting activities. The annual staff match would play from 10am to 6pm, and only a skeleton staff would be left at the university. Women staff provided tea and cakes, and Mr Wesley-Smith says they were happy social occasions. Photographer & Copyright: Advertiser Newspapers Ltd.en
