Abstract: | Bacterial species within the subginigival plaque biofilm are considered the aetiological agents of host mediated periodontal tissue destruction. However, not all individuals are equally susceptible to periodontitis with environmental and genetic factors contributing to disease development and progression. Over the last decade, viral infection has also been suggested to play a role in the aetiopathogenesis of periodontal disease alongside these traditional risk factors. (author abstract) |
