Research over the last two decades has shown that the frequency response diagram (FRD) of a pipeline system can be used for leak detection. The current research proposes a novel pipeline FRD measurement strategy by means of a logarithmic averaging algorithm and inverse-repeat binary sequences (IRS) based excitation. Numerical modelling for a pipe with a leak in a reservoir-pipeline-valve configuration is performed to verify the proposed technique. Compared with the correlation-based frequency response function (FRF) determination algorithm and maximum-length binary sequences (MLBS) based excitation signals, the proposed technique is superior in suppressing the effect of measurement noise and system nonlinearities.-
