Abstract: This paper describes the development of two expert systems using the CRYSTAL expert system shell on a personal computer. The first expert system assists an operator in the sequence of actions to be carried out following activation of one of 116 alarms in the control room of the water treatment plant. The second expert system aids a water treatment plant operator in making changes to the alum addition following the activation of one of the alarms related to alum.
