Description:	The brief for VST asked designers to: ‘.....transform the Square, creating an accessible and vibrant place that is internationally recognised as a symbol of South Australia’s unique culture and lifestyle’. The project delivered both thorough, structured background research and detailed proposition as a demonstration of this general aim: How can a masterplan demonstrably deliver such an ambitious and broad brief? The project deals with urban regeneration of underutilised space in the very centre of the city. It developed a plan which is widely accepted by the community, stakeholders and decision makers. The site is highly symbolic both for traditional custodians and for many subsequent settlers and communities. It proposed a new urban form that would acknowledge and encourage multiple communities and users, seeking to address traditionally competing needs. While many of the elements of the design are not unique propositions for new urban spaces, this achieves great density and diversity.
