dc.description.abstract | We proposed and experimentally demonstrated an in-fiber interferometric-type sensor by splicing an exposed core microstructured optical fiber (ECF) with lead-in and lead-out single mode fibers (SMFs) for refractive index-based biochemical sensing applications. Due to the multimode characteristic of the ECF, several modes can be excited at the lead-in splicing point and, after propagating through the ECF section, arrive at the lead-out splicing point with different phases forming a multi-arm interference pattern in the transmission spectrum of the device. Two dominant modes were found be consistently excited by maximizing the butt coupling between ECF and SMFs. The interference fringes shifts differently upon applying liquids of different refractive index on the exposed side of the EC. | - |
