Abstract: | Heavy tamping, or otherwise known as dynamic compaction, is a widely used deep soil improvement method for compacting dry or unsaturated, well-drained granular materials. As it stands the influence of differing soil properties on the effectiveness of heavy tamping is largely unknown due to the complex nature of soil mechanics for given site conditions. Within this study the effectiveness of heavy tamping was assessed for a dry sand using an axisymmetric finite element model within Abaqus. The soil behaviour was modelled with respect to an extended Cam Clay model with porous elasticity and an updated Lagrange geometrically nonlinear formulation. The results were compared with those obtained from a centrifuge model and prior parametric studies contained within the literature for a 20 tonne, 2.4 m diameter cylindrical tamper released from a 20 m drop height. |
