Abstract: A piston-cylinder arrangement has been designed and tested for the generation of continuous jets, fully modulated jets and individual vortex rings in cross flow. Hydrogen bubble vizualisation, Acoustic Doppler Velocimetry and dye visualisation have been implemented to test the validity of the equipment. Mean trajectories of the vortex rings and continuous jets were determine by time averaging video footage of the spatial and temporal evolution of the vortex rings and jest interacting with the cross flow. These trajectories were found to be in close agreement with trajectories quoted in the literature.
