Abstract: This paper presents some initial results on the development of a new experimental technique for accurate non-contact measurements of strain fields based on the recent advances in 3D scanning laser vibrometry. The underlying theory of laser vibrometry is initially reviewed. The technique has been applied to several plate specimens where the experiment results are presented, followed by a discussion of the advantages and limitations of this advanced technique, which has many exciting potential applications in modern engineering and technology.
